Anyone may participate fully in the life of a congregation whether they officially join or not.

On the other hand, as a nonprofit entity with a legally binding constitution that requires some positions be filled by legally joined members as well as the need for membership in order to have legal vote.

Often people choose to formally join the congregation as members. This typically involves meeting with the pastor several times to learn more about BSLC in particular, and to explore general  understandings of God, lived faith, scripture, etc. in the Lutheran Church.

 

The number of conversations or classes depends on how familiar with ELCA Lutheran theology and perspectives a person is.
